Make Mellow Mental Moments (Self-Relaxation Exercise)

When you feel yourself stressed and tense, try the following relaxation exercise. Take a 15-minute time-out. Make this time a scheduled appointment in your group calendar if you have to.

  • Find a comfortable, quiet space in which to relax and recline (if possible).
  • Take deep breaths – five-to-ten slow, full, deep breaths.
  • Close your eyes.
  • When you breathe in, silently say to yourself, “I am…”
  • When you breathe out, silently say to yourself, “…relaxed.”
  • Feel your muscles gradually relax.
  • Be aware of your body drifting lightly and feel a peacefulness come upon yourself.
  • Continue breathing slowly, with your eyes closed.
  • Allow your mind to drift to pleasant thoughts…or to nothing at all.
  • At some point, begin to drift back to awareness of your surroundings.
  • Slowly open your eyes to acclimate yourself to the here-and-now.
  • Be conscious of feeling more relaxed, less stressed, and more at peace in the moment.

Resume normal activity more refreshed and energized. You will interpret people’s comments and react to situations differently when you feel refreshed and energized from when you are tired and stressed.
